Keeping Your Dog Safe in the Summer

Keeping Your Dog Safe in the Summer

As the temperatures rise and the sun shines brighter, it's important to ensure that your canine companion stays safe and comfortable during the summer months. Here are some essential tips to help keep your dog happy and healthy all season long:

  • Hydration is Key – Just like humans, dogs need plenty of water to stay hydrated, especially in the heat. Make sure your pup always has access to fresh, clean water, whether you're at home or on the go. Consider bringing along a collapsible water bowl and a bottle of water when you're out for walks or hikes.
  • Avoid the Heat of the Day – During the hottest parts of the day, it's best to keep your dog indoors in a cool, air-conditioned environment. If you need to go outside, opt for early morning or evening walks when the temperatures are cooler. Asphalt and pavement can quickly heat up and burn your dog's paw pads, so stick to grassy areas whenever possible.
  • Provide Shade and Shelter – If your dog spends time outdoors, make sure they have access to shade and shelter from the sun. Set up a canopy or umbrella in your yard or create a shaded area with a tarp or outdoor doghouse. Remember that even shaded areas can become hot, so always check the temperature of surfaces before letting your dog rest.
  • Never Leave Your Dog in a Hot Car – This may seem like common sense, but every year, countless dogs suffer from heatstroke and death after being left in hot cars. Even on relatively mild days, the inside of a car can quickly become dangerously hot. Never leave your dog unattended in a parked car, even for a few minutes.
  • Watch for Signs of Heatstroke – Know the signs of heatstroke in dogs, including excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting, and collapse. If you suspect your dog is overheating, move them to a cool area, offer them water, and contact your veterinarian immediately.
